“I have always prided myself on being an empathic person. But I just came out of a relationship where I realised I was really only empathic on a surface level. I wasn’t practicing a deep empathy. The surface level empathy is “oh I understand what this person is feeling.” But that understanding of them comes from our own perception of the world. It’s a filtered understanding. I think the deeper form of empathy is: “What does this person need?”. When you consider someone’s needs, you are putting your own view of the world outside and are a lot closer to meeting them where they’re at. It’s less self involved. And it feels a lot closer to love.”
