QUESTIONS FOR CONNECTION

These questions are intended as conversation/ reflection starters.

You can contemplate them alone, in pairs, or in small groups.

The questions are grouped into 5 sections. Each section has a few options.

Pick the ones that speak to you, or make up your own!

I will ring a bell every 10 minutes to invite you to move to the next section. This is just so that you are aware of time, please do not feel constrained by it!

There is never any pressure to participate/answer any questions. Feel free to just say PASS if you’d rather skip something :-)

QUESTION 1: How did you get here?

  • What was your physical journey to this sunset spot?

  • OR, What brought you to this meetup?

QUESTION 2: What has your day been like?

  • Literally, what did you do?

  • OR, Metaphorically… (I like to use the metaphor of weather, so if I’m a bit overwhelmed and confused, I might use the metaphor of my weather being misty/foggy).

2 BEAUTY

QUESTION 1: What was the most beautiful thing you saw today?

  • E.g. a flower, a piece of graffiti, something touching on social media…etc…

QUESTION 2: (Philosophical option) What is beauty?

  • Beauty was one of the main values of the Ancient Greeks (alongside Truth and Goodness). Why do you think they held beauty in such high regard?

  • Is beauty important to you? What other values are important?

QUESTION 3: What’s the best thing that happened to you recently?

  • Your personal interpretation of recently! Today, the past week/month/year/decade.

3 SUNSET

QUESTION 1: When was the last time that you watched the sunset?

  • If you like, describe the scene: Who were you with? How did you come to be there? Was it spontaneous or planned? Did you enjoy it? Why/why not?

  • Is sunset watching something you often do?

QUESTION 2: As this day draws to a close, is there anything you’d like to leave behind in it?

  • This can be anything. A thought, a feeling, an idea, a possession, a person, a place, a way of being, a situation in your life…etc.

QUESTION 3: What does the sunset mean?

  • To you personally?

  • Culturally? (to any different cultures that you know of)

  • Imagine you existed in a time before electric light, how might the sunset feel then?

4 ROOSTING

QUESTION 1: The birds are preparing to roost. Are you also preparing to roost? Or are you a night owl?

  • Do you think some people are hardwired to be early birds and others to be night owls?

  • OR do you think differences in sleeping habits are down to nurture and lifestyle?

  • OR is it a bit of both?

QUESTION 2: When have you felt most rested?

  • If you like, describe the scene: Where were you? What time in your life was it? Did you do anything to improve rest, or did it just happen?

  • Is there anything you could do now to move a bit towards ‘better rested’?

QUESTION 3: There is a theory that there are 7 types of rest that every person needs:

PHYSICAL REST • MENTAL REST• EMOTIONAL REST• SENSORY REST• CREATIVE REST • SOCIAL REST• SPIRITUAL REST

  • How do you interpret these?

  • Which do you think you have enough of?

  • Which might you need a bit more of?

  • Would you add anything?

QUESTION 1: What does tomorrow hold for you?

  • What is planned?

  • If you were to set an intention for the new day, what might it be?

  • Do you like ‘fresh starts’? (i.e. new days, new weeks, new months) Or does time work in a different way for you?

QUESTION 2: If you chose to leave something behind with the sunset, what might it make space for?

  • Is there something new you want to start, or something old you want to reinvigorate?

QUESTION 3: What are you looking forward to?
